Dress Code

Below you’ll find the official dress code for each class at Phoenix Rising Dance Studio. Dress code is important for many reasons, and is therefore non-negotiable. Please have your dancers dressed appropriately for each class.

In class, a uniform dress code enables an instructor to see at a glance if dancers are in correct position, or need correction. Having uniform dress put all class members on the same page, and encourages cohesion. When you add sparkles, lace, bling, trim, etc., class wear becomes a costume, and costumes are for the stage, not the studio.

If you have any questions about dress code, please feel free to contact us or call Will at the studio.

We are happy to order your dancer’s class wear at a great savings over most retail outlets. We’re proud to offer Balera Dancewear and shoes, as well as shoes by Capezio, Weissman, and Bloch. To order dance wear, ask Will for an order form and have your child’s sizes available. Once the dance wear is ordered, your account will be charged, and delivery is usually in 1-3 days. We are also available to take measurements to make absolutely sure you’re ordering the right sizes. Ordering dance wear from the studio saves everyone a lot of time, trouble, money and confusion.

Dancers in ANY class at the studio are expected to have their own covered water bottle. Until Covid-19 restrictions are lifted, they are also expected to have an acceptable mask or face covering. Dancers not bringing a water bottle can purchase one from the front desk at their own expense.

Fall and Spring Evening Classes – Summer Programs Not Included

Ballet, Creative Movement
For ballet and creative movement, dancers are expected to wear pink leotards, white tights, and pink ballet shoes. They are also permitted to wear a pink wrap or elastic waisted skirt. Dancers of color may wear skin-tone tights.

Jazz, Musical Theatre, Tap
For these classes, dancers are expected to wear black leotards, black or skin-toned tights and black jazz shoes. Dancers could also wear fitted shorts in place of the tights. Tap students may wear slip on or tied tap shoes, but slip-ons are preferable for dancers not able to yet tie their shoes. Contemporary students are usually expected to dance barefoot.

Hip Hop
Dancers may wear dance clothes that represent their creativity and individualism. Clothing should be form fitting and not baggy or get in the way of movement. Tennis shoes are required, and these shoes should only be worn for hip hop classes. Our studio floors are very specialized, and little rocks and other debris that gets into the treads of everyday tennis shoes can seriously damage them.

Conditioning Classes
Conditioning classes are specialized for dancers, but are definitely fitness classes. Participants can wear what they would normally wear to the gym or to a comparable fitness class.

Combo Classes
For combo classes, such as, but not limited to pre-jazz tap combo, pre-ballet-jazz combo, etc, dancers MUST have the dance wear appropriate for each dance style in the combo. For example, any dancer in ballet/jazz combo must have ballet and jazz shoes, a black leotard and a pink leotard, white tights and black tights. Dancers of color may have skin-tone tights. Black shorts may substitute for black tights, and an optional pink skirt is acceptable for ballet. This can get confusing, so feel free to call if there are questions.
